Term ultrasound
In the beginning of the pregnancy an ultrasound will be made to determine the pregnancy length and the due date: the term ultrasound. This ultrasound is done between 10 and 13 weeks.
DETERMINing THE GESTATIONAL AGE
Until approximately 14 weeks, the development and growth of each foetus is almost equal. The ultrasound technician can determine the age of the foetus by measuring the child with the ultrasound during this period. In this way, the due date can be determined.
BEATING HEART
Do you see a nicely beating heart and a well-developed foetus at the term ultrasound? Then the risk of a miscarriage decreases from 10% to only 1-3% (depending on the gestational age). A reassuring thought!
VAGINAL ultrasound
Usually, a term ultrasound is done through the belly. But if you are less than 10 weeks pregnant, or if the uterus lies deep inside the abdomen, a vaginal/internal ultrasound will have to be done. An internal ultrasound is not painful and does not harm the pregnancy. The ultrasound probe is a long, 2-cm thick rod around which the ultrasound technician puts a condom and some gel as a conductive agent. The probe is inserted into the vagina only slightly. This brings you closer to the uterus and gives a better picture. The baby can then also be viewed more closely and captured more beautifully on a photograph.
FULL OR EMPTY BLADDER?
For an ultrasound through the abdomen, it is helpful if your bladder is slightly full. A full bladder lifts the uterus a little, making it easier to see the baby. For the vaginal ultrasound a full bladder is in the way. We therefore ask you to go and have a pee beforehand.
WHAT IF SOMETHING'S WRONG?
Of course, you assume that everything is okay with your baby and that the ultrasound is a nice experience. But unfortunately, it may happen that the ultrasound brings to light that something is not right. For example, in case of a miscarriage or (the suspicion of) an abnormality in the baby. If necessary, the ultrasound technician will contact the midwife about the further course of action. We realize that this sometimes causes you unnecessary anxiety. If you do not want us to inform you of any abnormalities, please notify the ultrasound technician at the beginning of the ultrasound.
Tricefy
When you come for an ultrasound at PUUR for the first time, we will ask you if you want to use the link of the ultrasound images with Tricefy. With this link you get the ultrasound photos and videos digitally sent to your phone during every ultrasound at PUUR! These images are automatically saved on your phone and are very easy to share with others. The link with Tricefy costs 5 euros once and can be paid at the first ultrasound in cash or by check.
Of course you will also receive a few printed photos, even if you do not use the link with Tricefy.
