Costs of obstetric care
Care provided by an obstetrician during pregnancy, labour and after the delivery is covered by the basic insurance policy of all Dutch health insurers. This includes the following:
- Check-ups during pregnancy and puerperium
- Guidance for childbirth at home or outpatient clinics
- Term ultrasound and ultrasounds on medical grounds
- 13 and 20 week ultrasound (SEO)
- Counselling on prenatal screening
You do not pay any excess for the above-mentioned care. However, you do pay the excess for blood tests, any medicines and the use of an ambulance. The compulsory excess is € 385.00 in 2021.
BIRTH
A home birth or a birth in hospital on medical grounds is covered by the basic health insurance. If you wish to give birth in a hospital (without medical grounds), this is called an outpatient birth, and in that case often a personal contribution is involved. This contribution differs per insurance company. You can take out additional insurance for this personal contribution. If a medical indication arises during the birth, the personal contribution is no longer applicable.
PRENATAL SCREENING
Tests within the framework of prenatal screening, as the NIPT, the 13 week ultrasound and the 20-week ultrasound are covered by the basic insurance or goverment.
