Breastfeeding

Breastfeeding is the most natural way to feed your baby. This applies to both the way you offer the food and the breastfeeding itself. Breastfeeding is a unique experience that you and your baby can share. It is also the healthiest form of nutrition for both of you. Breastfeeding is pure, because only your body can provide what is best for your baby.

WHY BREASTFEED?

  • Breastfed milk is by far the healthiest food for your baby and many times better than artificial infant formula because of all the antibodies and probiotics it contains
  • Breastfeeding promotes the bond between you and your child.
  • Breastfeeding reduces the chances of your child suffering from allergies, asthma and obesity in later life.
  • Breastfeeding is convenient. You always have it with you, it's immediately at the right temperature and it's exactly what your child needs.
  • Breastfeeding is better for you. Mothers who breastfeed have a more natural recovery from childbirth and less risk of breast or ovarian cancer.
  • Breastfeeding stimulates the building up of intestinal flora. A healthy intestinal flora ensures that the good nutrients are absorbed, and the germs are cleared away in the body.
  • The WHO (World Health Organisation) therefore recommends breastfeeding exclusively for six months and then for as long as you want. This is because your child's intestines will be fully developed after six months.

PUUR PREPARATION

In principle, 99% of women can produce milk. Unfortunately, this does not mean that breastfeeding will work immediately. This depends on many other factors. It is normal if you don't master it right away. There are only a few women who are so lucky!

COURSE

In order to prepare you as well as possible, PUUR offers a breastfeeding course. This course is given by Dana Neervoort, lactation expert IBCLC. Dana does this within our birthing centre under the name PUURmelk. She has completed a special course that makes her an expert in the field of breastfeeding. She is also a member of the NVL, the Dutch Association of Lactation Experts. This means that Dana meets all the requirements to claim a consultation from your health insurance company should it be reimbursed.

During this course, we will discuss why we at PUUR are so enthusiastic about breastfeeding, and we will give you practical tips for positioning your child, recognising feeding signals and also tips and tricks relating to breastfeeding when your pregnancy or delivery did not proceed optimally.

PRENATAL CONSULTATION

Did you breastfeed before and it didn't work out the way you wanted? Then you can arrange a consultation with a lactation expert. This consultation can take place during the pregnancy. In this consultation your previous breastfeeding experience will be discussed and an appropriate policy for the new breastfeeding period can be made.

PUUR TRAINING

In addition to the breastfeeding course given to you, Dana also provides training to the PUUR maternity nurses and the PUUR midwives. This means that all of us at PUUR Birth Centre share the same vision about breastfeeding and how to support it. We are also all completely up to date with our knowledge and new insights. In addition, all care providers at PUUR are always welcome to consult with Dana.

PUUR SUPPORT

Is breastfeeding going differently than expected? If there are breastfeeding problems, PUUR can help you with that. A lactation expert can offer support with latching-on problems, feeding problems, taking medicine during the breastfeeding period, pumping or refusing a bottle for instance.

PUUR Maternity Care has also trained three maternity nurses to be breastfeeding coaches. The coaches are an extra support to the maternity nurses in the field of breastfeeding. A breastfeeding coach guides a healthy mother with a healthy child during the (preparation for the) breastfeeding period and can recognise abnormalities and, if necessary, refer to our IBCLC lactation expert.
