Family diseases

In some families certain (hereditary) diseases or congenital abnormalities occur. If this is the case in your family, before you become pregnant, try to find out who of your relatives has the condition and whether it is indeed a genetic condition.

CLINICAL GENETICIST

A clinical geneticist is a doctor, usually affiliated with a teaching hospital, who specializes in hereditary disorders. Do you suspect that the condition in your family is indeed hereditary, and do you want to know what the consequences are for a possible pregnancy? Then you can have your GP refer you to a clinical geneticist. He/she can inform you about the condition, the degree of heredity, possibilities for research, carrier status, and the chance that your future child(ren) may have the disease.

Genetic research often takes a lot of time. If you ever want to have children, don't wait too long with research. Try to get clarity before becoming pregnant. If you are already pregnant, the midwife can also refer you for additional tests if necessary.

The hospitals Amsterdam Umc location VUmc and location AMC have a department of Clinical Genetics. You can make an appointment there.
