Meconium-containing amniotic fluid
Meconium is the very first poop of a newborn baby. It is a tough, sticky greenish substance that consists of all kinds of waste products. Normally, a baby defecates for the first time within 24 hours after giving birth. Some babies already defecate in the amniotic fluid. This can happen because the intestines are full and nothing is wrong, but it can also be a sign that your baby is short of breath. Since it is not clear what the cause is, the worst is assumed and the midwife sends you to the hospital, where the baby's heartbeat is continuously monitored. The gynecologist supervises the rest of the delivery. After birth, your baby will be checked by the pediatrician. If everything goes well you can go home after about 8 hours.
If the delivery is very fast, it may still be safer to await the birth at home than to go to the hospital. If this is the case, the midwife will discuss this with you.
Have your waters broken and is the amniotic fluid green, brown or are you unsure about the color? Then try to catch some and call the midwife. She will come and look at the amniotic fluid and, if necessary, refer you to the gynaecologist.
